Autonomy
Focus on patient rights, informed consent, and respect for patient decision-making. Address how nurses support or protect autonomy within the selected healthcare issue.
Beneficence
Discuss how nursing actions promote patient well-being. Emphasize ethical responsibilities to act in the patient’s best interest.
Nonmaleficence
Analyze potential harms related to the healthcare issue and how nurses work to prevent harm, minimize risk, and advocate for patient safety.
Justice
Examine fairness, equity, and access to care. Highlight ethical concerns related to disparities and equal treatment of similar cases.
Tip: Avoid defining principles only—apply them directly to the healthcare topic.
Bias in Healthcare
Identify relevant biases (e.g., socioeconomic, racial, cultural, age-related)
Explain how bias influences:
Patient outcomes
Ethical decision-making
Nursing judgment
Describe strategies nurses can use to recognize and reduce bias
Four Spheres of Care
When discussing a sphere of care:
Clearly name the selected sphere
Explain why it applies to the healthcare issue
Describe how ethical understanding supports quality nursing practice within that sphere
Overall Presentation Expectations
This assessment requires a professional, academic PowerPoint presentation. Slides should be visually clear, concise, and easy to read while demonstrating thoughtful ethical analysis. Content should be presented on the slides themselves, as speaker notes are not used for this assessment.
Slide Design and Layout
Use a clean, simple slide layout
Limit each slide to key points only
Avoid overcrowding slides with excessive text
Maintain consistent formatting across all slides
Text and Readability
Use bullet points rather than paragraphs
Aim for 5–7 bullet points per slide at most
Use readable font sizes:
Titles: approximately 28–36 pt
Body text: approximately 20–24 pt
Use professional fonts (e.g., Arial, Calibri)
Color and Visuals
Use high-contrast color combinations (e.g., dark text on light background)
Avoid distracting backgrounds or animations
Visuals (charts or icons) should support content, not replace explanation
Citations and Academic Integrity
Include APA in-text citations directly on slides where evidence is referenced
Use concise citation formatting (author, year)
Include a properly formatted reference slide at the end
Ensure all cited sources appear on the reference slide
Consistency and Professional Tone
Maintain consistent capitalization, punctuation, and bullet style
Use professional nursing language
Avoid abbreviations unless commonly accepted in nursing practice
